wavekey Mobile App Guide

How to use the wavekey app on iOS and Android: enroll your device, emit ultrasonic codes, and authenticate hands-free.

What is wavekey?

wavekey lets you authenticate with nearby devices by broadcasting an ultrasonic one-time code from your phone speaker. It's silent, secure, and hands-free.

Getting Started: Enrolling Your Device

Scan a QR Code

  1. Tap the QR code button (bottom-right corner).
  2. Point your camera at the enrollment QR code displayed when you first log in to wavekey on your browser.
  3. If a PIN is required, your organization admin will have received a 4-digit verification PIN by email. Enter it when prompted.
  4. A green checkmark confirms the scan, and your email is automatically set.
Camera Permission

The app will ask for camera permission the first time you scan. You must allow this for QR scanning to work.

Emitting an Ultrasonic Code

  1. Make sure your email is saved (the field at the top should show your email).
  2. Tap the large speaker button in the center of the screen.
  3. The status will change to "Emitting…" and animated rings will appear around the button.
  4. Tap the button again to stop emitting.
Email Required

If you try to emit without saving your email first, the email field will flash red. Enter and save your email, then try again.

Volume & Speaker Behavior

  • wavekey uses your device's loudspeaker (not the earpiece) to broadcast.
  • The emission volume is set automatically by the app; you don't need to adjust it manually.
  • Headphones / AirPods: The ultrasonic code is designed to be broadcast from the device speaker and should automatically route the audio through them.
  • The ultrasonic code is inaudible to the human ear; you shouldn't hear anything during emission.
  • wavekey supports background audio, so emission can continue even if you switch to another app.

Notifications

  • On first launch, wavekey will ask for permission to send push notifications.
  • Notifications are used to prompt you to emit — for example, when a linked device or access point needs to verify your identity.
  • Tapping a notification will open the app and automatically start emitting — no extra steps needed.
  • If you haven't saved your email yet when you tap a notification, you'll see an alert asking you to set it first.
